December 8, 2014

The Barre Board of Assessors wishes to announce that the tax rate for Fiscal Year 2015 has been approved by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. The rate has been set at $18.64 per thousand dollars of valuation. The new rate represents an increase of $2.58 over last year’s tax rate.  This increase in the tax rate is due to several factors. There has been a sizable drop-off in town receipts (landfill tipping fees have ended).  In addition, this year payments begin for voted debt exclusions (Ruggles Lane Roof and Window Project, and Barre Common Traffic Improvement Project).  In summary, the level of town spending determines how much money must be raised in taxes. When an increase in town spending is not matched by an increase in receipts, taxes must rise. Taxpayers should expect to see an increase in their tax bills.

Tax bills are expected to be mailed out by the end of December.

Applications for abatement will be due by the same date as the taxes are due i.e. within thirty days of the mailing of the tax bills. Applications for exemption (elderly, disabled veteran, etc.) will be due within ninety days of the mailing of the tax bills.
